Winter Weather Preparedness Guide

With the potential for snow, ice, power outages, and hazardous road conditions, taking time to prepare now can help keep you and your family safe.

Before the Storm

· Stay informed by monitoring trusted weather forecasts and emergency alerts.

· Have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio available.

· Stock several days’ worth of water and nonperishable food.

· Refill prescriptions and keep a basic first-aid kit on hand.

· Charge cell phones and battery packs; have extra batteries for flashlights.

· Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

· If using a generator, review safe operation: outside only, away from doors and windows.

· Gather blankets, warm clothing, and supplies in case of power outages.

· Protect pipes by dripping faucets and opening cabinet doors on exterior walls.

· Bring pets indoors and ensure you have food and medications for them.

· If travel is unavoidable, prepare a winter emergency kit for your vehicle.

During the Storm

· Stay off the roads if possible; ice and snow can make travel extremely dangerous.

· Never use generators, grills, or camp stoves indoors or in garages.

· Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk.

· Dress in layers and limit time outdoors.

· Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.

· Check on neighbors, especially older adults and those with special needs.

If the Power Goes Out

· Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.

· Operate generators safely and only outdoors.

· Use carbon monoxide detectors if available.

· If your home becomes unsafe, make arrangements to stay with family, friends, or at a warming location.

After the Storm

· Avoid travel until roads are cleared and safe.

· Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.

· Clear snow and ice carefully to avoid injury.

· Check for frozen or burst pipes and water leaks.
