GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Perform various physical tasks as assigned on a variety of equipment and projects.  A Street Drainage Crew Member II is capable of performing tasks of more than ordinary difficulty.  A candidate should have a specialized knowledge of specific construction disciplines such as pipe laying, grading, forming, pouring and finishing concrete, carpentry etc. and the ability to instruct others assisting.

Candidates will be assigned projects by the City Engineer.  In the absence of the City Engineer or with the Engineer’s concurrence, the Street Superintendent will give oversight.

Any other duties as assigned by their supervisor(s). 

This job requires strenuous physical activity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Cleaning ditches, storm drain inlets, storm drain pipe, curb and gutter, etc.
2. Replacing / laying new storm drain pipe.
3. Ability to use levels and read grade rods and calculate slopes.
4. Assist in striping and marking pavements and erecting street signs.
5. Patching streets.
6. Install and maintain storm drainage.
7. Clear debris, brush and other vegetation from ditches.
8. Flagging traffic.
9. Mow and trim right-of-ways and easements.
10. Assist in setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete for site-work.
11. Assist in performing regular maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
12. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job training in a specific skill area e.g. equipment operation; plus 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills: calculating percent grades, volumes, and ratios.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few known variables in situations of a routine nature.
