Searcy Art Gallery

Hours: Tues - Sat Noon - 4:00pm

Take a step back in time to the last half of the 19th century and experience engaging contemporary artwork as history surrounds you. A charming dwelling in Searcy offers this unique dual opportunity to its guests. Interests in historic preservation and visual art will both be delightfully satisfied at the Searcy Art Gallery which is housed in the beautiful historic Black House at 300 East Race Avenue, one of the most visible symbols of Searcy heritage.

Begun in 1858, the house was first built as a two-room log cabin. Benjamin Clayton Black purchased the house in 1866. Plans to remodel and enlarge the home were completed from 1872-1874. Black and his bride, Molly Rosamond Jones, traveled to New Orleans and were influenced by the structural styles they encountered there. The result is an architectural house of Victorian style featuring intricate decorative woodwork with a large front porch and second story veranda, as inviting today as it must have been when Mr. and Mrs. Black and their children enjoyed life here.

The Black House has gone through major renovations and restorations through the years, always under the watchful guidance of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. Period furnishings were carefully selected to enhance the historical setting and adhere to the historical perspective. Portions of original walls, ceilings, and flooring have been preserved and are seen in several rooms of the house. The staircase, a captivating fixture, is original to the house and made quite a journey to its home. It reportedly was ordered by Benjamin Clayton Black from France, imported to New Orleans, and then shipped upriver to Searcy. The Benjamin Clayton Black House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Searcy Art Gallery has been housed in the Black House since 1999. Gallery activities are overseen by the Searcy Arts Council, which hosts about 6 major exhibits in a calendar year. Many award-winning state and local artists have been showcased at the Searcy Art Gallery, and the council continually seeks to schedule exhibits of high quality to appeal to the artistic sense and pleasure of gallery visitors.

As a remembrance of a tour of the Black House and Searcy Art Gallery, a guest can buy a piece of featured artwork or make a purchase in the Gallery Gift Shop. Many local and state artists, photographers, and writers have placed intriguing items for sale in the shop including hand-made jewelry, wood carvings, watercolor paintings, photography, stationery, postcards, and a wide variety of books.
