Be A Winner Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
Be A Winner was developed by the Health Science Department of the University of Arkansas for presentation at the sixth grade level. Children at this age face a major transitional period in their lives. In school they are preparing to leave or have just left the highly structured elementary school environment for the relatively unstructured junior high or middle school setting. For some students learning to meet these challenges can be a highly stressful experience.
Trust and communication, self-esteem, peer and media pressure, assertiveness, making good decisions, alcohol and tobacco, understanding drug use, and alternatives to drug use are the seven basic areas the curriculum covers. It is presented in a manner that ensures ease in understanding and implementation. Each section contains a “For Your Information” section, a “Discussion” section, and an “Activity” section. This allows a time to introduce background information, discuss ideas and receive feedback, and actually have role playing sessions to practice implementing the lesson.
It is the purpose of the Be A Winner program to help these students learn that they can trust themselves and that each and every one of them is a worthwhile person. It is also the goal to teach these students that it is in their own best interest to act upon this recognition. Each unit of the curriculum builds upon the one before it helping to touch the lives of the student in a positive way. All young people have the right to feel good about themselves. When they develop positive feelings about themselves, they will have no need for drugs.
